Injury Update
Nevada lost senior tailback Luke Lippincott, the WAC’s leading rusher in 2007, for the season with a torn ligament during their 35-19 loss to Texas Tech.

Ebb and Flow
In a contest that would draw heightened interest from lunar table observers, the Crimson Tide hosted the Green Wave on Saturday. Alabama won 20-6 against a Tulane team that, due to Hurricane Gustav, spent the week in Birmingham “bowling and going to movies”. Or, as Jim Harbaugh might say, “just another week for football players at Michigan.”

374
You get the feeling, that neither Joe Paterno nor Bobby Bowden will ever call it a career before the other one releases himself from this mortal coil. Paterno’s Nittany Lions beat Oregon State on Saturday afternoon, 45-14, to give him 374 career wins. Later that night Bowden’s Seminoles edged Western Carolina 69-0 to give him 374.

Extreme Waco-ver
Baylor, behind superfrosh quarterback Robert Griffin, who appeared in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 400-meter hurdles just nine weeks earlier, won its season-opener 51-6 against Northwestern State to snap a nine-game losing streak.

In Durham, it’s always something
One week ago, the Blue Devils were undone by the wrong-way skydiver tandem (scheduled to descend into Keenan Stadium in Chapel Hill to deliver the game ball, the parachutists landed at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham instead). But at least Duke won that game, 31-7, against James Madison.

Last Saturday Duke, facing 4th-and-5 from its own 24 and trailing Northwestern 24-20 in the waning seconds, connected on a 24-yard TD pass for the winning sco—but no, Blue Devil offensive lineman Cameron Goldberg was called for holding. The ensuing 4th-down pass fell incomplete, spoiling what would have been Duke’s first two-game win streak since September 2003.

Oh, Wise Guy?
After Michigan beat Miami U. last Saturday, new head coach Rich Rodriguez, who was criticized for not knowing the lyrics to “The Victors” when he was hired back in January, had his team march over to the student section and sing the classic fight song with their Wolverine classmates. “Is that alright with everybody?” Rodriguez asked the media afterward.
