Vols still keeping recruits — so far

Fulmer was putting together one of nation's best classes before his ouster

Gophers come up big
Minnesota fans have two reasons to be excited despite a setback to Northwestern over the weekend. The Gophers picked up commitments from four-star junior college wide receiver Hayo Carpenter and three-star cornerback Kerry Lewis.

Carpenter, a 5-11, 185-pounder from Santa Clarita (Calif.) College of the Canyons, committed Sunday morning, turning down offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Oregon State, Washington State and others. Rivals.com ranks Carpenter as the nation’s No. 11 junior college player overall and the second-best receiver.

“I really knew all along that Minnesota was going to be a perfect fit for me, but I still wanted to wait things out and take my visit,” said Carpenter, who played his high school ball at Ridgecrest (Calif.) Burroughs. “Just being able to come to town for a game and hang out with the players and coaching staff sealed the deal. Just being around the people in the program was the highlight of the weekend for me.”

Lewis is a 5-9, 178-pound corner from Lancaster (Texas) High who is the No. 86 player in Texas and the No. 36 corner overall. Lewis also had offers from Oklahoma State, Oregon, Tulsa, Arizona, Iowa, Kansas and Kansas State.

“My plan was always to take all five of my visits, but I loved everything about Minnesota, so I knew that nothing could be better and I committed,” Lewis said. “I had a great time with the coaches and the players; everything just felt right.”

Starting over
Junior college defensive tackle Myles Wade has decommitted from Oregon and has reopened his recruitment.

Wade was a four-star prospect out of Portland Central Catholic when he signed with Oregon as part of its 2007 recruiting class. But he didn’t qualify academically and instead went to Arizona Western Junior College. He is not playing this season and has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

In a news release about his decommitment, Wade said he had “irreconcilable differences” with Oregon’s coaching staff. The release also said Wade wanted to play in the Pac-10 and that Oregon State is the “inside favorite right now.”
