Sex, lies, playoffs? Divorce sure to hurt Dodgers

Franchise won’t be able to improve while sensational proceedings go on

Dodgers owner and chairman Frank McCourt and his wife Jamie McCourt, shown in 2008 at a game, are involved in divorce proceedings that have brought sensational headlines to the L.A. media.

“It’s hard not to wonder whether the Dodgers will go the extra mile on a mega-contract that might increase their chances of winning the World Series,” Weisman added. “But even if Frank and Jamie had remained blissfully betrothed, I’m not sure they’d be interested in that kind of spending anyway, if the past couple of seasons are any indication. Short-term commitments have been the name of the game.

“I don’t think the Dodgers are dead by any means, but they’re going to need some smart moves and a bit of luck to finally get back to the World Series, regardless of the ownership situation.”

Usually in most divorces, the kids suffer most. The partners generally loathe each other and, although it is rarely spelled out in court papers, secretly wish that the other develop an incurable disease. In this case, whatever Frank and Jamie are thinking, it surely has nothing to do with fans of the club.

For instance, Jamie’s request for half a mil per month includes funds for unlimited travel, five-star hotel accommodations, hair and makeup for club events, business dinner and business lunches. The fact that such items are involved publicly in the dispute means that the Dodgers have become merely bystanders. They’re the sad-eyed teenager caught in the middle who wonders how adults could be so greedy and selfish and nasty. And their fans are wondering why they have to pay so much in parking in order to subsidize Jamie’s hair or pay for Frank’s lawyers.

If you’re the silver-lining type, you might point out that bouncing the bickering McCourts could be one of the best things that ever happened to the Dodgers in particular, and Los Angeles in general. Whatever short-term pain is involved might be worth it.

However, while Dodgers fans wait for the divorce to become final, while they face the uncertainty of new ownership, Frank and Jamie are giving Jon and Kate a run for their money. Why don’t they just replace Vin Scully with Octomom and get it over with?
